More Evidence that Mindful Breathing and Stretching Reduces Stress

A series of research publications by Sang H. Kim PhD et.al., documents the power of various mind-body practices to reduce symptoms of stress and compassion fatigue in nurses. Most recently he and his colleagues conducted an eight-week clinical study on nurses from a university hospital system with symptoms of PTSD. The nurses did mindfulness based breathing and stretching exercises twice a week for eight weeks. Both end of study and a follow-up eight weeks later showed reduced symptoms of PTSD and a persistent reduction in serum cortisol levels – an physiological indicator of stress.
